Many middle income families find their income is too high for some grant programs like the federal Pell Grant and the federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG) (discussed under Federal Grants). In Indiana, some of those same families may still qualify for some state grant assistance. It is also possible that a student may not qualify for federal or state grants when s/he first goes to college but when a younger brother or sister is enrolled at the same time, each student then becomes eligible for some assistance under the grant programs.

FAFSA: Key to Grant Consideration

The only way to be considered for federal and state grants is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In Indiana, certain steps in the FAFSA process must be taken by students early in the spring semester of the senior year of high school and each year after that until the student is finished. Without these steps, a student may not be considered for federal, state and institutional grants. Click here for more on the FAFSA process.
