Paying for College

Out of Our Own Pockets

Family Resources

Many students find it necessary to work a few hours each week to help pay for books or a portion of their bills. In most college towns, there are employment options for students wanting to work a few hours a week. Studies show that college students who work a reasonable number of hours each week (10-15 hours) actually do better in school than students who do not work at all or students who try to work too much. If a student does plan to work during the year, s/he should remember the following:

  • Be careful not to work so many hours that grades start to slip

  • The best jobs provide experiences that develop skills and even help secure future jobs
